Earlier in 2024, I had the pleasure to meet and chat with Jason Baker, founder, Senior Vice President, and Director of Green Mountain Grills. Baker and his team over at GMG were kind enough to send me the new pellet grill and a new pizza oven attachment . How does the Ledge stack up to other pellet grills? I’ve been using it for a while now, so let’s dig into it! Here is my Green Mountain Ledge PRIME 2.0 Review after have owned this grill for several months.
This WiFi-enabled pellet grill has a rounded hybrid chamber design that will give you that wood-fired flavor you dream of. It's wood-fired pizza oven enabled and BBQ rotisserie enabled, and has a grilling light and accessory side shelf. The temperature range goes from 150°-550°F, with Dual Meat Probes built-in and a USB Charging Port.
Convert your GMG Pellet Grill into a Wood-Fired gourmet pizza oven. The pizza oven attachment captures and funnels the heat from the Firebox directly up and into the steel baking chamber encasing the pizza stone.
Ownership Experience
I would absolutely recommend the Green Mountain Grills Ledge PRIME 2.0 pellet grill. It’s a versatile pellet grill that produces excellent smoke and flavor in my food. It’s been a fantastic smoker to use and I have really enjoyed it. I would recommend getting the RACKT system for more cooking space. I do not have this system, and I have run short on rack space sometimes, especially when smoking my party ribs or a ton of crispy smoked chicken wings.

Chicken Wings Smoking on the Green Mountain Grills Ledge Prime 2.0
If you’re looking for more cooking space but love everything else about the Ledge, GMG has the Peak PRIME 2.0 with 738 square inches of cooking space. The Peak expands up to 1,386 square inches using all six available racks.
What I Like…
- Build quality – This thing is built and sounds like a tank
- Good clean smoke production
- Exterior shelves mean prep space!
- Large Pellet Hopper

What Makes Me Angry…
- A small drain hole gets plugged easily during cleaning. This might be just me, but when I clean my grill, I scrape everything into the drain and push it all into the grease bucket. The scrapings almost always clog up the drain’s small hole. So now, I just scrape it all and grab it before pushing it into the drain hole. Again, maybe it is just user error and I just changed my cleaning routine.
What I wish I knew when I got this grill.
Sure, this was most likely in the manual, but who reads manuals?
- If you don’t turn it off correctly, the firebox will fill up with pellets and will not fire up correctly on the next cook. Press the red button to turn it off instead of flipping the green switch.
- Pizza Mode is difficult to find on the App.
- Pizza Oven takes a long time to warm up
Let me elaborate on a few quirks I encountered with this grill, hoping it will save you some time and frustration. Please note that I love this grill, and these are things that I wish I had known the first time I used this grill. I would chalk these up to user error more than flaws in the grill.
How To Turn Off The Green Mountain Grill
You can turn it ON and OFF a few different ways, but you can also turn it OFF incorrectly. The grill has a large green switch ON/OFF switch, and it is super easy to flip that switch and walk away when you are done cooking. DON’T DO THAT!. If you do, the grill might not start up properly because the firebox did not get rid of the old pellets from the last cook, and upon startup, new pellets are added to the firebox, which might overload it. If the firebox is overloaded, the grill will not start, and you will be sitting around wondering why your Green Mountain Grill is not firing up.

What is the proper way to shut down a Green Mountain Grill
The proper way to shut the Green Mountain Grill is to press the RED power button. This will trigger a shutdown mode that will eliminate all the old pellets in the firebox and prepare the grill for a clean startup. The third way to shut the grill down is by using the app. This will also trigger the shutdown mode and works just fine. Just click the POWER button in the upper right corner of the App to shut the grill down.
What To Do If Your Green Mountain Grill Will Not Start
It’s simple, most likely, the firebox is overloaded with pellets. Just take the racks and the grease tray out and vacuum the pellets out of the firebox. I have had to do this several times until I learned my lesson about shutting the grill down correctly. Or, if you don’t want to remove everything, you can use the small access door on the right side of the grill to vacuum out the firebox. Once the firebox is empty the grill should start right up.
Green Mountain Grill Pizza Oven
I have a love-hate relationship with the Green Mountain Grills pizza oven attachment. Don’t worry, it was mostly user error. Let me preface this with the fact that I have made some of the best pizzas of my life on this GMG pizza oven, but it has caused me some frustration in the learning process.
How To Find Pizza Mode and On A Green Mountain Grill.
The only way to enter Pizza Mode on the Green Mountain Grill is to turn the green switch on the grill to ON and then power the grill on with the App. Go to the App, connect to your grill, and press POWER in the upper right corner. Then, use the pulldown to select PIZZA MODE. You CANNOT enter Pizza Mode if you have already started your grill the conventional way. If you press the POWER button thinking you can switch it to Pizza Mode after the grill is fired up, you are wrong. All this does is enter the shutdown mode and you have to wait 15 minutes for the grill to shut down before you can start it back up again in PIZZA MODE. Again. You MUST turn the grill on with the app in order to select Pizza Mode. Below is a screenshot of how to turn on the GMG pizza mode in the app.

The Pizza Oven Takes a Long Time to Heat Up
I like my homemade pizza, but I don’t really like to wait. Once you put the Pizza Oven attachment on the grill and find Pizza Mode on the App, you must let the Pizza Oven warm up. Sure, It takes time to preheat any Pizza Oven. I like the stone on the pizza oven to be around 550ºF when cooking pizza. Be ready to wait 45 minutes to get the stone up to 550ºF. To be sure my facts were correct, I just paused writing this article and put the pizza oven on the grill and fired it up with the App in Pizza Mode, and timed it so that I could give you accurate information. After 45 minutes, the grill temp was stalled at around 215ºF, and the stone was at 558ºF. See the screenshots below.
I like the pizza stone to be around 550ºF, so this is perfect for me. Just be patient and let the pizza oven get up to temp. Please note that GMG doesn’t recommend that you turn the grill over 350ºF with the pizza oven attachment.

Green Mountain Ledge PRIME 2.0 Review Smoking Performance
I’ve loved smoking on the Ledge PRIME 2.0 pellet grill. The pellet hopper can hold up to 20 pounds of pellets which means I can smoke pork butts or brisket without having to refill the hopper mid-cook. But let’s dive into some of what sets the Ledge apart when it comes to smoking.
Unique Fan And Firepot Design
Every pellet grill in one form or another uses fans to circulate the smoke and heat created by burning pellets in the grill’s firepot. And the Ledge is no different in that regard. Where it does differ, and all of the GMG PRIME 2.0 grills as well, is that it features two fans and a different firepot.
Not only does the Ledge feature a fan to circulate the smoke and heat from the burning pellets, but it also has a second fan located by the hopper. GMG says that this prevents any chance of the fire traveling back along the auger and into your hopper. If you’ve ever seen that happen, it’s not something you want to have happen.
Then there’s the firepot itself. GMG calls it a Venturi-style firepot. The long vertical openings for the air help create “a burn pot cyclone for maximum heat distribution and complete combustion with no waste.”
The more efficiently a pellet grill can burn pellets and spread the resulting heat (and smoke) throughout the cooking chamber, the better. That helps maximize our pellets during the cooking process. And the more efficiently the pellets burn, the less ash waste.

High Peaked Lid
Why am I mentioning the lid as a feature? Well, GMG made it an emphasis with all of their grills to maximize the size of the cooking chamber. That includes designing the lid of the Ledge to be over a foot (13.5 inches, to be precise) above the main cooking surface. So if you want to smoke a beer can chicken or other large cuts of meat, you don’t have to worry about being able to get it in or out of the grill.
And the lid has a window so you can see what’s going on inside your grill without opening said lid and letting all that heat and smoke escape. The window, of course, will get a lovely shade of dark amber while you are smoking, so it needs to be cleaned after each use, or you will not be able to see through it.

Wi-Fi Controller
If you’re using a traditional offset smoker, you’re going to stay near to monitor the temps and add more wood as you smoke. But that’s not needed on a pellet grill. With the Ledge PRIME 2.0 and your smartphone, you can monitor and control your smoking session from the palm of your hand.
You can keep an eye on the internal temperature of the Ledge and even make changes as your cooking session needs it. That can even mean dropping the temp of the grill down to help keep your food warm without overcooking it if you’re running behind.
The Ledge comes with two meat probes so you can monitor temps inside the app. And if you’re smoking two different types of meat, you can set the target temperature for each probe independently in the app, too.
Overall Fit And Finish
The Green Mountain Grills Ledge PRIME 2.0 is built like a tank. It clocks in at just under 200 pounds and it’s not flimsy. But those locking swivel casters help make moving it around the cooking area possible.
I also love that both the lid and the pellet hopper have windows. I can keep an eye on the cooking progress without having to open the grill and lose all that heat and smoke flavor. The window in the pellet hopper means I can tell if I need to add pellets at just a glance.
