Green Mountain Grills had been teasing an upgraded version of their Prime series of pellet grills, and on October 10th 2023, the official announcement came on the company’s social media.
So what is Prime 2.0 and how does it differ from the original Prime series? Let’s take a quick look at what we know so far.
A History Of Green Mountain Grills
Green Mountain Grills, or GMG as it is sometimes referred to, was started back in 2006 by the Baker family who continues to own the company today. The Bakers set out to improve on the pellet grill they were using at that time, and that is how Green Mountain Grills got its start. They focus on partnering with local brick-and-mortar stores so people can see their grills in person.
New Features On The Prime 2.0 Series

The original Prime series was Green Mountain Grills’ top-of-line pellet grills, all with Wi-Fi connectivity. However, GMG wasn’t content with even the high-quality Prime series and wanted to improve on it. Here’s a rundown of the new features. They launched three new grills under the Prime 2.0 banner such as; Peak Prime 2.0 (large model), Ledge Prime 2.0 (mid size), and Trek Prim 2.0 (portable).
SideBURN Infrared Sear Station

One of the most common issues people have with pellet grills is that they aren’t the best at getting great sear or grill marks. Companies have tried multiple ways to address it, namely direct flame access of the firepot or gas burners.
With the Prime 2.0 series, Green Mountain Grills went in a different direction, utilizing infrared technology for a side burner. Now typically infrared grills are gas-powered, but there have been ones that are electric like the Char-Broil Patio Bistro Grill which features on our list of the best infrared grills as the best electric option for apartment users.
For a quick refresher, infrared technology uses radiant heat conducted through whatever material the grill uses (typically ceramic) to provide blazing-hot temperatures for high-quality searing.
I’ve never seen infrared sear stations on a pellet grill before, so this is a unique but logical way to address the issue of searing. You’ve already got the pellet grill plugged in so you don’t need extra equipment. I can’t wait to see how well this sears.
RACKT Customizable Racking System

One of the most interesting accessories you’ll find for smoking meat is a rib rack. It holds the racks on edge so you can maximize your cooking space. Well, Green Mountain Grills decided to make the accessory standard on the Prime 2.0 series. If you watch the YouTube launch video, you can see that the rack configuration is, as the title suggests, customizable. You can have the rib rack front and center, to the side, or however you want it.
We’re all used to standard grill racks in our pellet grills, but it’s nice to see a company take an important accessory and make it standard.
DC and AC Plugs
One of the other gripes people have about pellet grills is they aren’t the easiest to take on the go. You need a power source at all times. So people have used adapters to plug a pellet grill into their vehicle, but Green Mountain Grills makes things easy with the Prime 2.0 by including the needed plug. That means you can take a Prime 2.0 pellet grill on the go and get a great smoking experience even if there isn’t an electric hookup for miles.
The Prime 2.0 grills are compatible with the original pizza oven and rotisserie kits, so if you’ve already purchased those for an older grill, they’ll work just as well with the new ones. All the new grills are Wi-Fi-capable with the Smart Control app.
Wrapping It Up
Just like every other Green Mountain Grill, you’ll need to find a local dealer to order the new Prime 2.0 series grills. The website has an easy-to-use store locator so you can find a dealer near you. Green Mountain Grills says preorders are open now and should be delivered during the first quarter of 2024.
Stay tuned as more details come out and keep an eye open for potential full-length reviews to see how the new features work. I know I’m excited to check out that infrared sear station.
