We all love cooking on grills. That’s why you’re here, right? However, we also know the pitfalls of grilling small or fragile foods. Most standard grill grates have gaps where food can fall to be lost to the flames. That meant you had to find an alternative for cooking up sides or you couldn’t use the grill for certain main dishes like fish. You would end up running back and forth between the grill and the kitchen which can be a major hassle when you’re trying to enjoy cooking and even possibly eating in the great outdoors (or at least on your deck or patio.) Surely there’s a better way, right?
So HexClad, a manufacturer of fantastic pans, knives, and other cooking-adjacent products, came out with their BBQ Grilling Pan. If you haven’t heard of Hexclad before, that’s okay. We’ll give you some background on the company before we dive into all the specifics and our thoughts on the HexClad BBQ Grilling Pan.

HexClad first started in 2013 as a company manufacturing juicers in Los Angeles, California. However, CEO and co-founder of HexClad Danny Winer made the pivot to manufacturing pans with the signature hexagons etched into the cooking surface in 2016, and HexClad has grown from there. You can find a number of pans on their website along with pots, knives, and cutting boards.
Below is Mikes Hexclad cookware collection. Pots, Woks, Pans all in a stick free metal utensil friendly finish. These are a game changer. Don’t forget to check out there amazing salt and pepper mills as well.
HexClad Hybrid BBQ Grilling Pan Overview
If you like to grill veggies (or you have loved ones who want grilled veggies,) you’ve probably experienced asparagus, cubed potatoes, or sliced zucchini falling through one too many grill grates. If you’ve branched out to grilling fish, you probably have encountered fish sticking to your grill grates or falling apart into the depths of your grill.
The HexClad BBQ Grilling Pan is designed to take care of all these issues without relegating fish or side dishes to the kitchen. This 13” pan is coated with HexClad’s non-stick coating which the company says is safe for use up to 900°F. It’s large enough to accommodate a lot of veggies at once without hogging all the cooking space on your grill. The bottom of the pan is perforated to allow smoke and direct heat access to the food but each hole is small enough to not let your food fall through.
Now the mention of a nonstick surface might give you pause because you’re probably thinking your grilling tools will probably ruin the surface. I know my grill tongs and spatula are metal. However, HexClad says you are safe to use metal utensils while cooking in this pan. That’s important when this pan is going to help make grilling more convenient, so the last thing you want is to need extra tongs and spatulas just for grilling in it. We’ve all used rubber or plastic grill utensils and we know they do not perform like our metal utensils.
As for cleanup, you don’t have to do anything special. It can go in the dishwasher or you can just wash it by hand like a normal dish. HexClad does recommend that if you do end up staining the pan, you should soak the pan for 10 minutes and scrub with steel wool or some other sponge that has enough abrasion to really clean stains.
Overall, the HexClad BBQ Grilling Pan is perfect for grillmasters who want to cook just about everything on their grill without worrying about food falling through the grates or getting stuck.
So let’s really dive into those specific design features of this grill pan and explain why it’s important and how it affects the cooking experience.
HexClad BBQ Grilling Pan Features
Here at Angry BBQ, when we set out to review a product, we not only say what features it provides, we also want to explain why those features are important and how it works. So let’s break this pan down.
When you’re grilling, all the heat and potential smoke come from below. With the lid down, you do get a convection effect, but there’s a reason that food always cooks more quickly on the side oriented towards the bottom. You could cook your veggies or fish in a solid cast iron skillet, but you’re not getting the full grilling experience.
That’s why HexClad’s BBQ Grilling Pan has a perforated bottom. Now before your brain goes to old-school paper notebooks that have perforations so you can rip a single page of paper out, that’s not what we’re talking about. When it comes to this pan, we mean that there is a series of small holes drilled through its bottom. These holes allow direct access to flames and smoke while not allowing food to drop through.
If you’re cooking veggies for a side dish on the grill while you’re also grilling burgers or some other meat that drops fat or grease, those holes will allow some of the smoke created by the drippings to mix in with the veggies for even more flavor.
High-Heat Nonstick Coating
The specific coating that HexClad uses on this BBQ Grilling Pan is important for a few reasons, all of which make your life as a grillmaster easier. First, you don’t have to worry about how the pan will hold up on your charcoal or gas grill. As long as you aren’t throwing this pan into a Salamander-style oven that can reach over 1000°F, you’ll be able to use it on just about any grill you have in the backyard.
Secondly, that nonstick coating will help with grilling fish. Fish can stick and get ruined if you try to grill directly on the cooking grates. However, if you use something like a cedar plank, you don’t get the full effect of grilling. This pan’s nonstick coating gives you the necessary protection so your fish doesn’t get stuck while still giving you the grilling experience.
Thirdly, the coating makes cleanup easy for you when the cooking is done. You can throw the pan right into the dishwasher or easily wash it in the sink. It doesn’t require any specific care like a cast iron skillet, you can treat it as pretty much any other standard dish you’ve got. Cleaning Hexclad cookware is a breeze no matter what you cook in it.
Also, the coating is safe to use metal utensils on. Sure, I’ve got silicone tongs and spatulas in my kitchen, but I’ve got my metal grilling tools outside. If I needed to grab more tools for one specific pan, that’s not super convenient. Instead, HexClad’s nonstick technology further enhances the convenience of this grill pan, not hampers it.
Now the other issue you might have with the nonstick coating is that you aren’t going to be able to get a good sear. Now the ability of the pan to handle temperatures up to 900°F will help that. Most standard nonstick skillets can’t handle that kind of heat. However, HexClad wanted to make sure that you would still get the sear you’d expect from grilling over high heat.

The pan is made from two layers of stainless steel for heat retention sandwiched around a core of aluminum to help conduct that heat evenly and quickly throughout the pan. So that heat helps with searing, but the final touch is the laser engraving that gives HexClad its name.
Each HexClad pan, including the BBQ Grilling Pan, is laser-etched with a distinctive hexagonal shape. The exposed stainless steel also helps with the searing capabilities while the majority of the pan is still covered with the nonstick coating so you don’t have food sticking and you can clean the pan easily.
How confident and proud is HexClad with the BBQ Grilling Pan? It’s backed by a lifetime warranty that covers any manufacturing defects. As long as you are taking proper care of your pan, you don’t have to worry about needing to go to great lengths to replace it if something goes wrong. Instead, you’ll just reach out to HexClad and they’ll take care of you.
HexClad BBQ Grilling Pan Fit And Finish
This pan is sharp. The combination of the dark non-stick coating with the stainless steel hexes covering the majority of the pan is a great look. It has two large stainless steel handles so you can move it easily without spilling any of your precious food. It would be ironic if you were using a pan to protect food from falling into your grill only to drop the pan and spill the food after taking it off the grill, wouldn’t it?
The grilling pan is large enough to accommodate plenty of food without dominating the entire grill. The sides are curved so you can get a spatula under your food for easy flipping.
HexClad BBQ Grilling Pan Owner Experience
Mike Haas’ Thoughts
I’ve been using the Hexclad BBQ Grill Pan and their frying pans for several months now. Previously I used All-Clad non-stick cookware for several years which is also a respected manufacturer of premium cookware.
Overall I’m very impressed with how well the non-stick technology works on Hexclad cookware. I was a bit skeptical at first because usually there is always a drawback when you get a unique feature like non-stick coatings. If the pan is non-stick then you cannot use metal utensils. I was expecting the cookware to be somewhat non-stick so you could use metal utensils, but in reality these pans are 100% non-stick. Jannah and I love the fact that we can use our metal utensils on this cookware because silicon utensils are not as strong or allow for as much dexterity.
Cleanup is also a breeze. Wash this just like any other pan you have and it cleans quickly. No heavy scrubbing ever required.
Fit and Finish is another area that Hexclad shines. This cookware is beautiful and it’s a shame I keep in in a cabinet. If our kitchen was larger, I would display these above the kitchen island permanently.
