Typhur Sync Quad - In Use on a smoker

When Typhur reached out to us here at Angry BBQ about reviewing their newest creation, I was excited. I’ve enjoyed using their products around my kitchen and my backyard cooking area. When I saw that it was a four-probe version of the Typhur Sync I reviewed in 2023, that excitement went up a notch.

I am a huge fan of truly wireless meat thermometers. I don’t have to worry about pinching wires in my grill or untangling a mess every time I grab a meat thermometer. However, I’ve been known to participate in some big smoking sessions. I’ve used the Sync, and it’s a huge help, but sometimes, you need more than two probes.

That’s where the Sync Quad comes in. But how does it stack up? Let’s dive in.

Typhur Sync Quad Review

Typhur Company Overview

Typhur is a company driven by its slogan “Aiming for #1 in Cooking Science.” It is based out of San Jose, California, and offers a suite of cooking equipment aimed at the home cook and backyard pitmaster. Alongside the two versions of the Sync wireless meat thermometer system, I have also tested the InstaProbe instant meat thermometer. Typhur has also produced the Sous Vide System and the Dome air fryer.

Typhur Sync Quad Overview & Specs

I’m a big fan of the original Sync, and the Sync Quad doubles the fun. It is a bigger unit, of course. It has to hold four probes and display the information on the screen. So let’s dive into all the technical specs.

Typhur Sync Quad Features

This is the third Typhur product I’ve tested, and the Sync Quad continues the trend of high-quality and feature-packed products.

Four Probes

Arguably the biggest difference between the original Sync (now called the Sync Dual) is the number of probes. The Quad, as suggested by the name, has four probes. While the probes look identical, there is one other main difference that is perfect for those of us who love to reverse-sear steaks and tri-tips.

The new probes are capable of withstanding direct heat up to 752°F versus 707°F for the Dual’s probes. This may not be a huge difference, but it means a lot when you’re trying to get a beautiful sear or grill marks on your steaks without overcooking them.

These four probes are as accurate as they get in the wireless meat thermometer market. They are accurate to within half a degree Fahrenheit thanks to the five internal temperature sensors in the main body of the probe.

And as far as cleaning the probes? They are rated IPX8 so they can survive being submerged even in over one meter of water for 30 minutes. So whether you wash by hand or love using a dishwasher, you don’t have to worry about damaging any of these probes’ internal components with water.

Typhur Sync Quad Base

One of the features of the Sync Quad that I absolutely love is that you don’t have to use it with your smartphone. You can set up basic cooks and monitor temperatures with just the base thanks to the touchscreen controls at the bottom of the display. The 3.5-inch display showcases all of the information for each probe so you can see everything you need right there. There are plenty of wireless meat thermometers that don’t have a display, so this is another way Typhur sets itself apart.

Typhur Sync Quad Base

The base also has slots for all four probes. They slot in nicely for charging and can’t fall out easily. It serves as both the charger for the probes and the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi hub. And it charges with just the included USB-C charging cable so you can ensure you’ll never run out of battery power during that 10+ hour smoking session.

Also, the base has a nice kickstand built into the back to keep it upright during use. It’s a nice feature for setting it on the counter or a side shelf.

Typhur App

Even though you can monitor your cooking session from just the base itself, this is where the real work happens with the Sync Quad. When I reviewed the original Sync Dual, I was a big fan of the variety of pre-set options for setting up your cook while also giving you the ability to set up a custom cook. That hasn’t changed with the Quad, either.

It’s easy to use and everything you need to see is right in front of you. Setting up pork butts or briskets in the app is easy to use and monitor.

Typhur Sync Quad Review

The Sync Quad has a lot of features. That’s fantastic. But what is it like to use it? Well, much like the Sync Dual, I love the Quad. It’s like the Dual except for bigger cooking sessions.

Accuracy

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Typhur hit a home run with the original Sync Dual’s accuracy. It’s incredible that a wireless meat thermometer can be accurate to within half a degree. That continued with the Sync Quad, which makes complete sense. The five sensors at the probe’s tip give the algorithm all the information it needs to provide you with the most accurate temperature possible.

The ambient temperature sensor falls prey to the issues I’ve seen across the board. If you’ve got it too close to the meat’s surface, the temperature will read way lower than the actual temperature in the cooking chamber. But if you’re using a pellet grill or other computer-controlled smoker (or just really good at fire management), you’re likely not concerned with tracking the ambient temperature outside of a precipitous drop-off that it will happily alert you to.

Connectivity

The Sync Quad uses both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to connect to your phone. So if you don’t have Wi-Fi connectivity, you can still use Bluetooth to monitor all of your cooking from your phone. The Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz only) gives you the ability to see temperatures no matter how close or how far you are from your grill.

I didn’t have any issues with connectivity whatsoever. I kept my base in my kitchen which is the room closest to my cooking area and never had any issues with the probes staying connected. And I had no issues with the base dropping off my Wi-Fi.

App Functionality

The Typhur app is a simple interface with a lot of layers underneath if you want to dig. I appreciate that it shows me everything I need to know at a glance without having to dig through screens.

I also like just how many presets the app comes with. Whether you’re cooking something as simple as a pork butt or even some wild game or exotic animal like kangaroo, Typhur’s got you covered. And if you prefer having all the control in the world, you can easily set up a custom cook, too.

There are a few things about the app that feel slightly odd. The first is that the app defaults to the Explore tab which showcases recipes for their various cooking systems. I don’t have their Dome air fryer or the Sous Vide station, so I would rather it default to the Devices tab. But it’s simply a tap away so it’s not a big deal at all.

Also, you have to go into your Profile tab and then click on the Settings icon to switch your app and Sync between Celsius and Fahrenheit. It feels a little weird but it’s a setting that I never use so it doesn’t bother me. And it seems like it’s a setting you’ll only need to change once at most.

The final oddity need to go to the Profile tab to access your cooking history, not the Device page. That may seem odd at first glance, but it does mean you can review past cooking sessions without having to be connected to your Sync which is nice.

Battery Life

Typhur says that the probes can last for over 50 hours on a single full charge. I haven’t truly put that to the test, but I can assure you that I encountered no power issues during any normal smoking sessions. I always default to putting the probes back in the base once they’re clean and dry so they always get a fresh charge.

But if you ever run into a situation where a probe dies, Typhur says you can charge it for two minutes and get two hours of runtime.

Charging the base is super easy, just plug the included USB-C cord into a charging block and the base and you’re good to go.

Overall Fit And Finish

The Sync Quad visually is simply a larger version of the original Sync Dual. And I loved the look of the original. The combination of silver and black is sharp. The display is clear and easy to read. The probes themselves are easy to grab thanks to the larger end. And each probe is clearly marked with a number so you don’t get confused about which probe belongs to which temperature reading.

Typhur Customer Service And Support

I didn’t have a need to contact Typhur’s customer service or support teams for the Sync Quad. I did when I reviewed the original Sync Dual, and I received a response within two hours when I emailed them at [email protected].

They also have a phone number, 1-888-838-6563, for U.S.-based customers, but it only prompts you to leave a message for them to contact you back, not connect you to a live representative.

Comparison Between Typhur’s Syncs: Quad vs. Dual

I’ve gotten to put both of these wireless meat thermometers from Typhur to the test. The only real major difference is the number of probes, four versus two. That obviously affects the size of the base but otherwise, the base is identical. The only other difference is that the Quad’s probes can handle a little extra heat.

Typhur Sync Comparison Quad vs Dual

Regardless of which version of the Sync you opt for, you’re going to get the same great accuracy and user experience.

Do I Recommend The Typhur Sync Quad?

If you like to cook a lot of meat at one time, I absolutely recommend the Sync Quad. If I’m hosting a party or there was a big sale on pork butts, I love the ability to track four internal temperatures from one app. The Sync is easy to use but the app is packed full of options if you want to go deeper.

You just aren’t going to find a more accurate wireless meat thermometer than the Sync Quad. Some other companies are starting to get on Typhur’s level, but they’re setting the standard.

What I Like…

  • Four probes mean I can smoke for an entire party using one system
  • The big display allows me to see what’s going on at the base without even using my phone
  • Feature-packed app that is still easy to use

What Makes Me Angry…

  • It’s not cheap. If you’re not cooking three or four big cuts of meat regularly, I’d recommend the Sync Dual instead

Final Thoughts

Typhur knows what it’s doing with these thermometers. The Sync Quad is a fantastic way to simultaneously watch lots of meat on your smoker or grill. Whether you’re smoking multiple pork butts or reverse-searing some big cowboy steaks, the Quad has you covered. It may be a bit overkill if you’re only smoking one or two big cuts of meat at a time, but Typhur will have you covered with the Sync Dual. Either one will take care of you.
