Who is The Good Charcoal Company and what sets them apart from other companies producing briquettes and lump charcoal? And just how is cooking over their charcoal?

The Good Charcoal Company Charcoal
There are a ton of charcoal brands on the market today. But how can you be sure what’s in them? You can find all-natural charcoal or charcoal stuffed to the brim with fillers and even lighter fluid.
I personally want as little extra in my charcoal as possible. And The Good Charcoal delivers that. They use all-natural acacia wood, corn starch (a binder), and water to make their charcoal. That’s it.
As to why they chose acacia, that’s a two-fold decision. One, acacia is a dense hardwood, perfect for turning into charcoal. Secondly, there are 16 species of acacia trees that are invasive in South Africa and other parts of the African continent. So, harvesting these acacia trees for charcoal production benefits a lot of people.
Are The Good Charcoal Company’s Super Briquettes Any Good?
The idea behind The Good Charcoal Company is great. But are all these Super Briquettes simply a sustainability project?
No. I’ve gotten a chance to cook with this charcoal, and I was quite happy with the entire experience. It’s easy to light, burns well, and burns for a while. What more can you ask for in a charcoal?
Grilling Experience
I simply loaded up my charcoal grill with some of the Super Briquettes and used a firestarter to light the fire. I let it catch for about 15-20 minutes, and then I added my chicken.
One of the first things I noticed about The Good Charcoal Company’s Super Briquettes was the smell. Sometimes, charcoal has a very strong smoke that stings your nose or eyes. These briquettes were some of the cleanest-burning charcoal I’ve ever cooked with. I could stick my face over the charcoal fire and breathe in the smoke without any hint of irritation.
I could smell charcoal burning, but it was the cleanest-smelling smoke I’ve ever experienced.
Also, the ashes looked different from any other charcoal I’ve burned. It may simply be that the acacia wood burns differently, but it was interesting to see the ash after I finished cooking.

I found that the charcoal burned for quite a while, long enough for grilling chicken thighs and chicken breasts. This charcoal is perfect whether you’re grilling hot and fast or you are making a charcoal snake for smoking.
What I Liked…
- Easy to light
- Long burn time
- Plenty hot for grilling

What Makes Me Angry…
- Availability in-store can be spotty. There are plenty of locations near where I live in North Carolina, but when I plugged in my hometown in Western NY, there wasn’t a store that had The Good Charcoal Company products within 25 miles
Final Thoughts
Overall, I’m very pleased with The Good Charcoal Company’s Super Briquettes. I’d be more than happy to continue grilling over it. You can get the Super Briquettes in either an eight-pound or 15.4-pound bag. The Good Charcoal Company also carries lump charcoal in eight-pound, 15.4-pound, and 27.5-pound bags.
